ARTARIA PREPARES FOR A NEW SEASON The 2010-11 season is upon us and we are currently immersed in the preparation of Samuel Barber’s String Quartet, Op.11, completed in 1943, and Mozart’s G-minor Viola Quintet, K. 519, for our opening concert on September 12th at Sundin Hall. We are enjoying the straightforwardness and brevity of the third movement of the Barber. Apparently, it is not what he had in mind originally, but it certainly follows the Adagio in a powerful way. The earlier version resides in manuscript form at the Curtis Institute library and is very rarely performed. We are also looking forward to returning to the Mozart Gm Quintet after having performed it back in June at our Stringwood Festival. Our collaboration with Jonathan Sturm, violist of the Ames Piano Quartet, resulted in a fine performance, and we think you will agree that it is a remarkable piece. Our season will continue with quartets by Ginastera, Schumann, Beethoven, Shostakovich, and Haydn, as well as a beautiful piano quintet (1897) by American composer, Arthur Foote. Stay tuned for more updates here and commentary on Facebook.
